Solids settle to the bottom of the tank where bacteria break down organic matter. Water (i.e., effluent) then flows from the tank into a drainfield of underground pipes surrounded by gravel and soil. WebThe listed sizes are for primary drainfield areas. The total drainfield area required is the sum of the primary and reserve areas. The reserve area is 1.5 times that of the primary drainfield. Well, I wouldn't agree with that level of certainty, but true, you should not let a tree-service drive over your septic tank (and definitely not on your leach-field).
